Granny Square Tutorial
Grab your hook and favorite colors of yarn, it's time to crochet my favorite thing - the granny square!

Materials

Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Abbreviations (US Terms):
ch: chain
dc: double crochet
sl: slip
st: stitch
Traditional Granny Square Instructions:
Make a magic ring or ch 4 and join with a sl-st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc into loop, [3 dc, ch 3] 3 times, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. – 12 dc, 4 ch-3 spaces
Round 2: Join with a new color in ch-3 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into next ch-3 space, ch 1; repeat from * to end, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. – 24 dc, 4 ch-3 spaces
Round 3: Join with a new color in ch-3 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in ch-1 space, *(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1) in ch-1 space; repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off – 36 dc, 4 ch-3 spaces
Round 4: Join with a new color in ch-3 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 1) in each ch-1 space to next ch-3 space, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) into next ch-3 space; repeat from * to last ch-3 space, (3 dc, ch 1) in each ch-1 space to end, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
Repeat round 4 if desired.
"Condensed" Granny Square Instructions:
Make a magic ring or ch 4 and join with a sl-st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 2 dc into loop, [3 dc, ch 2] 3 times, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. – 12 dc, 4 ch-2 spaces
Round 2: Join with a new color in ch-2 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in space, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into next ch-2 space] 3 times, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. – 24 dc, 4 ch-2 spaces
Round 3: Join with a new color in ch-2 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in space, 3 dc in space between the sets of 3-dc, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 space, 3 dc in space between the sets of 3-dc; repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off – 36 dc, 4 ch-2 spaces
Round 4: Join with a new color in ch-2 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in space, *3 dc in each space between the sets of 3-dc to next ch-2 space, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into next ch-2 space; repeat from * to last ch-3 space, 3 dc in each space between the sets of 3-dc to end, join with a sl-st into top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
Repeat round 4 if desired.
