Granny Square Cardigan Instructions:
Please note that the instructions and specific sizes and gauge given are to be used as a guideline. You may change the size of your squares and add options to the cardigan to fit your desired size.
Granny Squares:
I like to use the “condensed” version of the granny square for the cardigan, however you can use a traditional granny square if you prefer. Find the full instructions and tutorial for both granny square methods here: https://youtu.be/Oq2BzyhHPQ0
You may also wish to substitute these squares with more decorative squares.
Make as many rounds as needed to obtain the size desired. The granny squares should measure approximately 6 [7, 8, 9, 10]” for the finished sizes listed above.
If you would like to make different sized granny squares or if your gauge doesn't meet the one listed above, use the formula below to determine the overall circumference of the cardigan.
Chest Measurement Formula:
To get a true idea of your cardigan chest circumference, measure your granny square from one side to the other. Take that number x3. Then take that number x2.
Example: 8" square x 3 = 24" (panel width)
24 x 2 = 48" (total circumference)
Make and assemble squares:
Once you determine the size and gauge for the squares, make 23 squares.
Assemble the squares using the graphic below:
Sew the squares using the desired method:

Fold the cardigan:
Fold the granny square cardigan in half along the top center seam of the sleeves. To add additional width to the sides and sleeve circumference you may want to make a gusset. See the video on the bottom of this page for instructions on how to make one.
Then using the desired sewing method, sew along the bottom side of the sleeve from the wrist to the underarm, then from the underarm to the bottom edge on the side of the body. Repeat for the other side.
Alterations:
To make your sleeves or body length longer you may add additional rows or rounds of the granny stitch. I have included a tutorial for how to do this in the video below.
Sleeve Cuffs:
To taper the sleeve cuffs, join the working yarn on the bottom seam.
Round 1: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch around making sure to end with an even number of stitches. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the first single crochet.
Round 2: Chain 1, beginning back in the same stitch as the turning chain, single crochet 2 together to the end. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the first stitch.
Cuff Ribbing:
Find a tutorial for how to make single crochet ribbing here https://youtu.be/P-9MzM1Pd6A
Switch to the smaller hook for ribbing
Row 1: ch 7, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch to the sleeve cuff (6 sc). Sl st into st at base, and sl st into next st. Turn.
Row 2: working back up the row of ribbing, skip the 2 sl sts just made and sc in blo to top of the row. [6 sc] Turn.
Row 3: ch 1, working back down the row of ribbing, sc in blo to bottom of the row, sl st into next st (not the base stitch of current row—the next one) then sl st into following st. Turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 to the final stitch and fasten off leaving a long strand of yarn for sewing. Using a tapestry needle, seam the cuff edges together. Fasten off.
Bottom Hem
With larger hook, join with a slip stitch at the bottom corner, ch 1, sc across placing one stitch in each of the double crochets and chain spaces. Turn to continue with ribbing or fasten off.
Hem Ribbing (optional):
Switch to smaller hook
Row 1: ch 7, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch to the sleeve cuff (6 sc). Sl st into st at base, and sl st into next st. Turn.

Row 3: ch 1, working back down the row of ribbing, sc in blo to bottom of the row, sl st into next st (not the base stitch of current row—the next one) then sl st into following st. Turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 to the final stitch and fasten off.
Button Band:
With larger hook, join with a slip stitch at the bottom corner of the front opening, ch 1, sc up the side, across the back neck and down the other side, placing one stitch in each of the double crochets and chain spaces. Turn.
Switch to smaller hook
Row 1: ch 9, sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each ch to the sleeve cuff (8 sc). Sl st into st at base, and sl st into next st. Turn.
